A Remarkable Journey Through Time: Surprises Unearthed With My iGENEA DNA Test & ancestral Surname 'Roy'

Family name Roy

The iGENEA DNA test I embarked on revealed enlightening and unexpected information about my ancestry. Although I knew 'Roy', my surname, had French roots, I discovered a deep Celtic background from my paternal line. Moreover, an unexpected trace of East Asian ancestry from my mother's side presented an intriguing twist, showcasing how diverse and far-reaching my family history truly is.

I initially decided to take an iGENEA DNA test out of curiosity, as I always wondered about the origins of my surname 'Roy.' The results were more surprising and enlightening than I had anticipated.
The DNA test revealed that my paternal line carries the R1b-L21 genetic marker, which is prominent among people with Celtic heritage. This was unexpected because 'Roy' is primarily a French surname, prevalent mainly in the French-speaking parts of Canada and Europe. As per the test, my ancestors are from a Celtic group that resided in what is now known as Ireland and Britain, prior to migrating to other parts of Europe. This shift likely occurred around the time of the Roman Empire's decline.
Furthermore, the test indicated that my family descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, a legendary Irish king known for his bravery and generosity. It's quite stunning to think that I could be tied to such an influential historical figure.
What surprised me the most were the connections to East Asia. My DNA test showed a trace of the O-M122 haplogroup from my mother's side, marking ancestral roots in East Asia. To know that my family's story has such a diverse global tapestry is immensely exciting.
This discovery encouraged me to research deeper into the history and migration patterns of both the Celtic and Asian populations, broadening my understanding of global diasporas.
The iGENEA DNA test has not only helped me understand where 'Roy' originates from but also provides a glimpse into the voyages our ancestors embarked on. My personal narrative is more expansive and intricate than I had ever envisioned.

O. Roy
