Deepening Understanding of the Hammond Surname Through the iGENEA DNA Test - A First Person Report

Family name Hammond

Having explored my genetic lineage through the iGENEA DNA test, I have traced back the roots of the Hammond surname far beyond than I imagined. The test's technical sophistication, grounded in deep genetic analysis and its accurate results, lead to surprising insights into my surname's Germanic origin and ancient migratory patterns.

The process of analysing my genetic heritage through iGENEA DNA test was utterly fascinating. Armed with a simple mouth swab kit, I embarked on a journey of genetic discovery, uncovering links to a surname that has puzzled me for years - Hammond.

iGENEA's DNA test covers important genetic markers on both the Y chromosome and the mitochondrial DNA allowing them to provide results on both paternal and maternal lineage. The Y-DNA test is incredibly detailed, often tracing paternal lines up to a thousand years back. The mtDNA test also intrigued me, providing unique insights into maternal ancestry. The technical precision of the test, based on the high-resolution 67-marker Y-DNA test and Full Sequence Mitochondrial DNA test, is impressive.

Also, I found the accuracy of the tests dependable. The representation of the Haplogroups in their results was extremely comprehensive. I was assigned to the Haplogroup I1 (Y-DNA) and Haplogroup H (mtDNA), which are predominant in Northern Europe. Such precision helps in conferring a highly accurate geographical distribution of the ancestral lineages of my DNA.

The results illuminated significant aspects of the Hammond surname origin and its geographical distribution. The Y-DNA result traced my paternal lineage back to a Greco-Roman lineage, which links the Hammond name to a Germanic origin. The surname is possibly derived from two Old German words, ‘ham’ meaning ‘home’, and ‘munda’ meaning ‘protector’. This was a surprising insight that differs from the widely believed English origin of the surname.

Additionally, I gained insights into migratory patterns based on my Haplogroups which indicated that my ancestors were part of a group that migrated to Britain after the last Ice Age. This has potentially linked me to a group of people who have lived in Britain for thousands of years.

Overall, the iGENEA DNA test has enriched my understanding of the Hammond surname, contributing to a more nuanced comprehension of my lineage and ancestral history.

V. Hammond
