Journey of Discovery: Unveiling unexpected turns and rich heritage with my iGENEA DNA Test Results on Hämel Surname. (

Family name Hämel

Having recently taken an iGENEA DNA test to delve into my ancestry and dig deeper into the roots of my surname Hämel, I was met with a multitude of surprises. The test revealed an unexpectedly robust Celtic origin, trace Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, and a sprinkle of Scandinavian Viking lineage in my DNA. As I delved into my roots, I discovered a rich tapestry of heritage that transcended traditional notions of lineage and geography.

I recently had my DNA tested through iGENEA, marking an exciting chapter in my journey towards personal self-discovery. My DNA test results threw light on aspects of my heritage that I was utterly unaware of, enriching my understanding of my roots and heritage in an unimaginable way.

To my surprise, my test results revealed a strong Celtic origin, a revelation that honestly took my breath away. It indicated that about 57% of my DNA links back centuries to the Celts, an ancient European group known for their warrior spirit and artistic abilities. Having always believed myself to be primarily of German descent due to my surname Hämel, this discovery was a captivating twist in the tale of my lineage.

After methodical research and reaching out to genealogists, I delved into the history of my surname Hämel. The origin of Hämel is German; however, it exists in regions beyond Germany due to historical migrations. There is a significant presence of the Hämel surname in England, frequent in regions settled by the Anglo-Saxons, a group of Germanic tribes known to have had interactions with the Celts. This intersection might explain the unexpected Celtic influence in my genes.

Adding another layer to this intriguing personal narrative was my link to the Ashkenazi Jews. The DNA results showed approximately 21% Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, a detail that was entirely unknown in our family's history. This opened fascinating lines of inquiry into the hidden, rich tapestry of my ancestry.

Finally, traces of Scandinavian Viking lineage were found in my DNA. Although minuscule in percentage, these Vikings genes were like an unexpected spice, adding excitement to this profound voyage of discovery.

Though the journey to unearthing my complete ancestry has just begun, the iGENEA DNA test's initial revelations have artfully expanded my understanding and pride in the cultural mosaic that comprises me.

S. Hämel
